In order to improve mobile accessibility and the user experience for those looking for information regarding eligbility criteria, this study examines the entire redesign and transformation of the Nevada unemployment website. The initiative addressed the difficulties users have using mobile devices to access the website and made it easier to understand the eligibility conditions.

Problem

There were numerous usability problems with the initial Nevada Unemployment website, particularly on mobile devices. The text wasn't responsive and navigating through eligibility criteria was often cumbersome, which frequently caused user irritation and potentially hindered access to vital unemployment benefits.

Our team then asked the following question:
How can we develop a responsive, mobile-friendly design that provides seamless access to the website on a variety of devices and streamlines the display of eligibility information to make it more intuitive and easily understandable?

Current website

Process

Research: We began with in-depth user research, including user surveys and interviews with 20 participants to identify pain points and gather insights into user preferences. With our findings, we created a user persona and a user journey map to clearly understand how users would interact with the website.

Mobile Optimization: The website was rebuilt using responsive web design principles, ensuring that it was displayed correctly on smartphones and desktops. This included optimizing images, text, and interactive elements for smaller screens.


Intuitive Navigation: The navigation menu was simplified into a content-based structure where the pages were put in logical order according to what users were looking for.


Eligibility Quiz: Through a rigorous iterative design process, we found that the eligibility information should be the first step in the user flow. Thus, a prominent "Eligibility Quiz" section was introduced at the top of the homepage and as a pop-up banner — this section led users to fill out a quick questionnaire to see if they would be eligible for unemployment benefits with next steps at the end.


User Testing: The redesigned website underwent rigorous usability testing to identify and rectify any remaining issues and gather feedback for further improvements. We also tested the eligibility quiz feature for usability issues and to see if it helped new users with next steps.
